If you’re looking for something to watch over the holidays, we’ve got a list of good green finds for you. From “Wild Isles” to “Last Light” to “Frozen Planet II” to “Extrapolations”, here are some of the top climate-related series to stream in 2023.
1. It’s no surprise that Canadian-born filmmaker James Cameron’s work has made both of our top environmental streaming lists this year. The extraordinary four-part series, “Secrets of the Elephants”, is executive produced by Cameron and it is narrated by none other than actress Natalie Portman. It is available to stream on Disney+.
2. From polar bears to snow monkeys to penguins to Siberian tigers, “Frozen Planet II” is a six-part nature series narrated by Sir David Attenborough. It is available to stream on BBC Canada, “exploring the Arctic and Antarctic, snowy high mountains, frozen deserts, snowbound forests and icy oceans”, according to the official trailer by BBC Studios.
3. “Down to Earth”‘s second season takes place in Australia. According to the official Netflix trailer, Zac Efron “takes an eye-opening adventure across Australia, delving into its rich biodiversity and culture and the efforts to protect both.” The series is available to stream on Netflix Canada.
4. The five-part series “Wild Isles” is narrated by Sir David Attenborough, featuring the British Isles. The Prime Video-streamed natural history series covers “one of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes on Earth,” according to the official trailer. “Discover the secret worlds of nocturnal creatures, rock pools, ponds, and grasslands.”
5. “Our Planet II” landed on Netflix Canada in May 2023, to bring more of “life’s adventures” to audiences around the world. The cinematography is second to none, as the Emmy-winning team that brought us “Planet Earth” and “Our Planet” takes us through the “mysteries of how and why animals migrate.” It is available to stream on Netflix Canada.
6. “High Water” is a six-part drama series “inspired by” true events when the Millennium Flood affected Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany in 1997. It focuses on the “scientists and local government officials who faced life-and-death decisions when a destructive flood wave threatened the city.” The limited series is available to stream on Netflix.
7. “Extrapolations” is a star-studded Apple TV+ drama series, based on “a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have become embedded into our everyday lives.” It has eight interwoven stories “about love, work, faith and family from across the globe will explore the intimate, life-altering choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population. Every story is different, but the fight for our future is universal.” From Meryl Streep to Sienna Miller to Daveed Diggs to Gemma Chan to Forest Whitaker, this series has countless powerful voices from Hollywood playing characters fighting for the future of the planet. It is available to stream on Apple TV+.
8. “Last Light”, starring Matthew Fox, this five-episode dystopian limited series is based on the bestselling novel.
